About

Grocery Workers United is dedicated to the idea that we are more powerful when we speak together. When we stand together, as workers in the retail grocery industry, we can fight for better wages and benefits and improve jobs throughout our industry.

This site is maintained by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW). The UFCW has over 1.3 million members in the United States and Canada who are part of an international movement to improve the lives of all workers, including those in the retail, food processing, and meatpacking industries.

We are the labor union with the largest percentage of workers under the age of 35, and we understand how vital it is that we stand up against corporate greed and stay united for the good jobs our futures depend on. We understand that retail jobs are the jobs of the future, and we believe in sticking together to make those jobs good middle-class jobs–the kind that will allow us to pay for college, raise our families, buy a house, and give us a shot at the American dream.

When UFCW members bargain contracts with our employers, we are setting the standard for wages, benefits, and respect on the job that all employers in the industry have to compete with. Without our union negotiating for improvements and strengthening the rights of workers, there are few forces to prevent greedy, irresponsible employers from creating a race to the bottom in terms of wages and general working conditions.

As companies like Walmart continue to grow and corporate influence in Washington weakens existing labor laws, the role of unions is more important now than ever. With our combined strength, we can help create an environment in which responsible employers feel less pressure to drive down working conditions and working people have access to jobs that allow them to support themselves and their families.
